Robert Montgomery
Robert Montgomery’s pieces follow the Situationist tradition of detournement, which is basically the hijacking of advertising space to replace it with poetry. Through its anonymous presence in a public space, Montgomery’s art is a very personal challenge to the barriage of ads that usually fill up mental space with restelessness, insecurity, and the desire for things we wouldn’t otherwise get into debt for, or an ideal body type it would be necessary to stop eating/go under the knife for. A simple phrase or thought can be enough to challenge a psychological landscape that is otherwise so easy to take for granted.
Joseph Egan
London-based graphic designer Joseph Egan together with his colleagues from Chelsea College of Art & Design created this eye-deceiving anamorphic typography installation as part of the assessment for his Foundation Degree course.
Mary Coble
Mary Coble is a performance artist and photographer. She often uses her body as a metaphor and site for questions that involve, as well as move beyond, corporeal matters. Through these performances Coble challenges herself and others to critically consider their reactions and interactions with social issues of injustices. She strives to confront violence, bigotry and poverty that she sees a as threat to society both physically and mentally.
Claire Fontaine
They Hate Us for Our Freedom
Claire Fontaine is a Paris-based collective artist, founded in 2004. After lifting her name from a popular brand of school notebooks, Claire Fontaine declared herself a "readymade artist" and began to elaborate a version of neo-conceptual art that often looks like other people's work. Working in neon, video, sculpture, painting and text, her practice can be described as an ongoing interrogation of the political impotence and the crisis of singularity that seem to define contemporary art today. But if the artist herself is the subjective equivalent of a urinal or a Brillo box - as displaced, deprived of its use value, and exchangeable as the products she makes - there is always the possibility of what she calls the "human strike." Claire Fontaine uses her freshness and youth to make herself a whatever-singularity and an existential terrorist in search of subjective emancipation. She grows up among the ruins of the notion of authorship, experimenting with collective protocols of production, détournements, and the production of various devices for the sharing of intellectual and private property.
Nicole Dextras
Nicole Dextras has been actively engaged as a visual artist since her graduation from the Emily Carr College of Art in 1986. Her previous studies included dance, painting and graphic design at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson BC.
Her art studio, located on Granville Island in Vancouver BC, is open to the public. She divides her time between her art practice, teaching, casting editions for local artists and volunteering for art organizations such as the BC Book Arts Guild and the Artists and Artisans of Granville Island.
Gordon Young
'Typographic Trees', 2009
For the library designed by architects Penoyre and Prasard, Gordon Young has created a ‘forest’ of oak columns which are sited throughout the library and installed from floor to ceiling like supporting pillars. Workshops with users of the library were held by artist Anna Sandberg to gather information on people’s favourite books, places and memories. Using this generated content, Gordon worked with typographers Why Not Associates to design the columns. Each of the 14 solid oak columns reflect different subjects from the gothic to the romantic and are sited in specific relevant locations within the library.
Hope and Glory
Hope & Glory – a Conceptual Circus by Simon Birch.
Hong Kong artist Simon Birch has created Hope and Glory, perhaps the most ambitious multi-media art project ever undertaken in Hong Kong.
The show is non-profit, open to the general public and consists of film, sculpture, installation and sound and is somewhat like a film set, or a theater set. The works are all physically large and the viewers wander through the environment at their own pace.

Artist statement
I love the abstract nature of number and letterform when stripped back to their symbolic/energetic origin. For me, numbers as quantitative animals are only useful as they relate to the Whole...or as a way of expressing the infinite...or as a way of tricking the mind out of its addictive nature. My endeavour is to use the convincingly 'real' and familiar language of word and number, in such a way as to point towards a whole new and infinitely more fulfilling reality – one that has of course, been staring me in the face! I like the ideas that these pieces are visual koans*.
* Koan – a paradoxical question to a student for which the answer is demanded, the stress of meditating on the question often being illuminating.
