Teresa Margolles Frontera

"Frontera" reflects on the dramatic scale of drug trafficking in Mexican society. The artist has used basic but very striking elements to create the works in "Frontera", and despite their minimalist style, they reveal great emotional depth and tragedy. The works go beyond the specific context that gave rise to them, with a universal value that explores our mechanisms of denial and the taboos still surrounding death and violence in contemporary society. The Museion exhibition features walls where executions took place, that the artist took down in Mexico and rebuilt in Bolzano—Muro Baleado (Culiacán), 2009, and Muro Ciudad Juárez, 2010—along with the works Plancha, 2010 and Cubo, 2010, a minimalist cube weighing a ton made out of iron from reinforced concrete taken from demolished buildings. The Bolzano exhibition will also be the first opportunity to see the filmed action Camiseta, created specially for "Frontera" and shot in the cities of Juarez, Kassel and Bolzano.

Teresa Margolles (Culican, Mexico 1963), is one of the founders of the group SEMEFO (Servicio Médico Forense/Forensic Medicine Service). In 2009 she represented Mexico at the Venice Biennale, while solo shows include Los Herederos, Peter Kilchmann, Zurich (2009), and En Lugar de los Hechos – Anstelle der Tatsachen, Kunsthalle Krems (2008). She has taken part in Manifesta7, Bolzano (2008), the Liverpool Biennale (2006), the Prague Biennale (2005 and 2003), and the Gwangju Biennale (2004).

Boris Tellegen aka Deltainc was born in 1968, in the Netherlands.
He became one of the pioneers of the European graffiti movement, in 1984, when he made his tag DELTA for the first time. His work shows the hallmark of his time at the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Technical University Delft, from where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Design Engineering in 1994.
The first DELTA tag appeared on the streets in 1984: through the years this Netherlands based artist has developed a complex and unique style that resembles isometric plans and plays with ideas of architecture and high tech futuristic vehicles. Boris introduced an alien and idiosyncratic aesthetic into graffiti art that escapes the common logo-like word IDs. He influenced writers all over the world for decades with his 3D letter style.

Boris Tellegen's fine art paintings and sculptures have recently been exhibitied in Singapore / Malaysia, London and Italy.

An internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, he skilfully experiments with a variety of mediums in order to create his amazingly intricate paintings, prints, 3D sculptures, video works and installations. His work is reminiscent of the old Utopists and Constructivists and can be seen as portraits of industrial architecture.

The series Broken houses is based on photographs of abandoned structures neglected by man and destroyed by the weather. The photos are found in the web while pursuing an amateur photographer from North Dakota who obsessively documents the decaying process of these houses. His photographs are used to create small scale models. Afterward, in the studio, the models are photographed again, omitted from their background and placed in gray.

He is one of the most appreciated young ceramic artists. In the speed of the daily impulsions of life develops Pim Palsgraaf his creative urge.

His ‘Multiscape’ sculptures are city scenes literally carried by preserved dead animals or other objects found along the side of the road. With this subject matter, Pim Palsgraaf shows us contradictions between culture and nature. The urban city is seen to overtake nature. One gets the feeling that urbanism is a process which grows like a tumor.

Statement

The studio of Pim Palsgraaf (1979) is located in the industrial section of Rotterdam.

His love-hate relationship to this environment is fundamental for his art work.

In the “Multiscape” sculptures he shows the outgrowths of urban architecture.

Comparable to tumours of urban growing he drapes found objects on taxidermy animals to symbolize the contrary of culture and nature.

The city seems to overcome the animal and to bring it to its knees. His paintings reveals us the clandestine interior of cities. Deserted rooms, damp corridors and ceilings in danger to collapse at any time show his weakness for urban decline, for the natural environment of men slowly sinking into oblivion.

Lara Almarcegui is interested in taking a closer look at the architectures and spaces that surround us and are among the least enhanced, for the potential freedom that they represent.

In her projects, the Spanish-born artist Lara Almarcegui, who lives in Rotterdam, examines processes of urban transformation brought on by political, social, and economic change. Since the mid-1990s, she has studied urban features that are not usually the focus of attention: wastelands, construction materials, invisible elements. In her first solo show in Austria, Lara Almarcegui has created three new works for the Secession that relate closely to the city of Vienna and to the historic exhibition house while also recurring to earlier works the artist developed in various cities all over the world.

Lara Almarcegui frequently works outdoors. She has already implemented numerous international projects, from the restoration of a market hall slated for demolition in San Sebastián (Spain) to close studies of derelict lots in Rotterdam, Bilbao, São Paulo, Lisbon, and Amsterdam. She collects historical, geographic, ecological, and sociological data about vacant areas in the urban space that will soon have changed, documenting them and interviewing experts. “One wasteland has very different characteristics from the next. I try to present each site in as much detail as I can, zoom in a lot, try to present the uniqueness of each site.” Lara Almarcegui bundles the information she gathers in Guides, brochures that present the past, present, and future of the vacant lots—some had been put to public, some to private uses—in an objective and matter-of-fact fashion.

Vincent Ganivet creates works from raw materials, from everyday objects and phenomena diverted from their initial function: the domestic water damage becomes a fountain, a firecracker giving brith to a mural painting... Just as in a magic trick, the objects reveal their secret lives: the banal becomes beautiful and the accidental poetic. A 2003 graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, Vincent Ganivet regularly exhibits his monumental works in France, in the Modules at Palais de Tokyo in 2007 and 2009 amongst other places, and abroad. His work recently entered the collections of the Fnac as well as the Frac Ile-de-France and Frac Poitou-Charentes. With the Palais de Tokyo’s support, he notably participated in the last edition of “Platform”, an artistic event of great scope at Seoul.

From the acquired insight that reality does not need to be reinvented and that it, in itself, supplies prototypal images, Jens Reinert arms himself with a camera on his strolls through the urban landscape. Remarkably enough the resulting photos do not capture striking and forceful scenes, but preferably average places familiar to everyone, such as a filling station, an office, a city department or an interior, i.e., public and private localities that seem interchangeable and that stick in our memory as clichés. Because Reinert in his way catches classic and genuinely existing exponents, heproduces optically memorable images of our everyday reality. But, in fact, they no longer ensure the absolute exposition of a prototype, but show the discontinuity that has opened up between what is real and our perception of it, between the sporadic and the typical. It is almost given that an artist who exposes himself to this kind of bridge between reality and its diverse forms of reception must proceed in an interdisciplinary way. Since the depictions are based on different levels that comunicate with each other, they forment a dispute on which artistic methods stick closest to reality´s heels, whether it is photoraphy, scale models, the Photography of the model or even the conversion of the photographed subject into painting ...

ARTIST STATEMENT

Currently, I use ceramics as my material in my method of expression, incorporating various decorative styles, patterns, and symbolic forms as my principal axis in creating my works.

The decorative styles and forms I allude to and incorporate in my works each contain a story based on historical backgrounds and ideas, myths, and allegories.　Their existence in the present age makes us feel many things,; adoration, some sort of romantic emotions, a sense of unfruitfulness and languor from their excessiveness and vulgarity.

And on the other hand, they make us feel tranquility and awe that can almost be described as religious, as well as an image as an object of worship.

By citing such images, I feel I am able to express an - atmosphere- that is a part of the complex world in this age.

In fact, the several decorative styles and forms I cite simultaneously hold divine and vulgar meaning in the present age, having an irrational quality that contradict each other, which I feel express an important aspect in the contemporary age in which we live.

Also, the technique of ceramics has a tradition that has been a part of the history of decoration over a long time, and I feel the delicateness and fragile tension of the substantial material well express my concept.

"The exhibition, entitled “Let it bleed“, is a series of life-size sculptures, as well as a series of fragments, such as heads or hands, all made of paper. The works depict young women and young girls. The female figures impress with the naturalness of their features and poses, the perfection of modelling and the beauty of volume.

Paper, Nomidou’s dominant material, now becomes a key component in her creative process, inextricably linked to painful and systematic research on the technical level, as well as on that of aesthetic integration. The artist respects her material and, although it is cheap and vulnerable, she does not “adulterate” it by using other materials. Moreover, she does not use it as a shell, an encasing to cover a necessary inner structure by providing a fake, idealised skin. Nomidou builds and shapes her works from the inside out solely using paper and paperboard. The internal cardboard frame is built with a vertical and horizontal grid in order to be able to support and render stillness in her sculptures, while also ensuring balance in contraction and expansion. The homogeneity of her material allows the equilibrium in the behaviour of the interior and the exterior, and thus ensures its duration.

Regarding her technique, the perfect rendition of facial features, of expression, of the naturalness of pose, of body proportions, is based on a process of combining partial plaster casts, the meticulous observation of an exhaustive photographic documentation of her sitters and a painful processing of the outer skin. The perfect prints are synthesised, cut, sewn, glued, rubbed, and through the mastery of her touch achieve the fully realistic rendering of her sitters. (...)"

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work gives me permission to stare.

We are told not to stare because the act is rude. It might make someone else, the one upon which our gaze is fixed, feel uncomfortable. So we steal glimpses, don’t let our eyes linger too long, pretend not to see, and are encouraged to retreat within ourselves. But the moments when I am compelled to stare, are the moments when I feel most alive. My curiosity, awe, and questioning make me alert. The stare signals an intense engagement with a reality outside of myself.

Other people are compelling subjects and objects of contemplation because we will never be in their heads as completely as we are in our own. Despite the fact that, fundamentally, people are essentially the same, this lack of direct access to interiority makes others a perpetual mystery. It cloaks every interaction in uncertainty and ambiguity. But it is exactly that mystery, uncertainty, and ambiguity that make the inquiry worth returning to. And it is such complexity of understanding that I strive to infuse into my work.

My sculptures do not provide answers or assertions, but embrace uncertainty through the provocation of more questions. The figures are permanently frozen mid-gesture in a moment that encourages the generation of ambiguous narratives. Stripped from the context of previous actions, the figures’ personalities, motives, intentions are malleable and unfixed in the viewers’ minds. Who they are is in a state of flux dependent on the stories viewers create.

Born in 1980, Christina West is an avid people watcher with a dry sense of humor, active imagination, and an innate impulse to create with her hands. If you meet her and she stares at you a bit too long, she's probably just picturing you naked.

Buddy Nestor was born and raised in Collingswood, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a Latch-Key Kid during the birth of cable TV. This led to endless hours in front of the television, watching movies and drawing. He gravitated toward strange cult and horror films. As a skateboarder in the late 80’s and early 90’s, he was exposed to Punk, Indie, and Heavy Metal music. In 1997, after the birth of his son, Buddy decided to teach himself to paint. In 1999, he traveled around the world on an aircraft carrier and painted every day. This was critical in his development as an artist. Presently, he drinks beer and paints in his basement.

“My latest series of paintings are portraits of female artists. These physical and psychological images are my attempt to capture the true nature of humanity. They are spiritual X-Rays. The models that I use in my work are all beautiful women. However, there is nothing beautiful about the portraits I create.”

Robert Montgomery’s pieces follow the Situationist tradition of detournement, which is basically the hijacking of advertising space to replace it with poetry. Through its anonymous presence in a public space, Montgomery’s art is a very personal challenge to the barriage of ads that usually fill up mental space with restelessness, insecurity, and the desire for things we wouldn’t otherwise get into debt for, or an ideal body type it would be necessary to stop eating/go under the knife for. A simple phrase or thought can be enough to challenge a psychological landscape that is otherwise so easy to take for granted.

Two Figures with Box 1, 2011

Bill Durgin’s photographs reflect his fascination with the figure as a sculptural entity. His complex arrangements of the body require extreme contortion to achieve an austere effect, as if the figures have been abstracted. The gestures examine his own corporal boundaries as well as those of the performers he works with and are impressive in their ability to seemingly defy physical limitations. Transforming the body into an amorphic object, Durgin uses a large format camera and film to capture the figures so that they appear to be without appendages. Recognizable as bodies, they remain detached from common perceptions of the human form.

Bill Durgin received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University in conjunction with School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1995. And in 2000, Bill received his Masters in Fine Arts from California College of Art (CCA) in San Francisco.

Bill’s work has appeared in galleries throughout the country including, most recently, the 2008 SMFA Traveling Scholars exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and a Solo show, Figurations, at Merge Gallery in New York. He has also exhibited at Judy Goldman Fine Arts in Boston, SF Camerawork, jennjoygallery in San Francisco, and Ego Gallery in Barcelona, Spain. In 2006 he was named as a Surface Avant Guardian award winner. His work has also been published in Paper, Corduroy, Elle, New York, Time Out New York, Hayden’s Ferry Review, and Art News, to name a few.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice investigates the psychological distance between artificial life and our physical sensations. By way of collecting, modifying, and representing information and materials from everyday experiences, I develop a series of works integrating sculpture, performance, and digital media.Mass-produced products and mechanical systems are manipulating our daily life and our physical sensations. We are not aware of the loss of intimate connections with our physical body, but we know we cannot live without technology.

Wearable structure and video performance as methods to investigate the potential visual dialogues between the body and the materials combined with the body. I would like to draw the attention to the initial stage: to investigate the possibilities between the material world and our physical selves.

In this work the crossing of the boundaries of media and categories becomes not only necessary, but natural. London-based graphic designer Joseph Egan together with his colleagues from Chelsea College of Art & Design created this eye-deceiving anamorphic typography installation as part of the assessment for his Foundation Degree course.

Anamorphic Typography

An exploration of the potential and existing relationship between architecture and typography

This project evolved out of a brief we had set ourselves as part of the assessment for our Foundation Degree course at Chelsea College of Art & Design. From initially looking into the existing and possible relationship between graphic design and architecture we discovered the process of anamorphosis as used by the fine artist Felice Varini.

After researching and testing the process in our studio we began to search for an ideal architectural space within our college buildings to execute our installation in. When planning an anamorphic installation is it important to consider that to maximise the fracturing of the design, it is best to try and touch as many plains as possible. We eventually decided to carry out our installation in a corridor of our college (as shown in the images) using the long walls to maximise the distortion of the letterforms. All of our work is site specific and we spend as long as possible discussing a choosing the perfect architectural locations for our works.

We initially chose the phrase "It's more than just print" to challenge the conventional idea that graphic design can only be realised in 2 dimensions (a poster, business card or magazine etc). The phrase is also a comment on the technique as when viewed from the right viewpoint, the design looks as though it is flat on a 2D plain.

For our second installation we chose the phrase “it’s a point of view” as a comment on the process of anamorphosis where the design only becomes fully legible when viewed from a specific point of view. This piece was also a comment on the the subjective nature of good design, given it’s placement in our end of year exhibition featuring works by all of our peers.

Our work encourages the viewer to walk into and around typography, an immersive experience considering that their usual relationship with type would normally be realised on a two dimensional surface be it printed or computerised. Being able to appreciate it physically painted onto walls of buildings which the viewers are used to interacting with every day draws attention to the beauty of typography and at same time highlighting the architectural forms that it adorns.

Brooklyn-based artist Graham Caldwell creates glass-based installations which explore issues about surveillance, threat and self-obsession. Using many separate glass parts, usually mounted to a wall by metal fastenings, Caldwell arranges the glass objects so that they reflect off each other and mirror the space in the gallery as well as the viewer looking at them.

Marc Swanson works in diverse media, including sculpture, drawing, collage, photography, video, and installation. Given this diversity, the artist employs a surprisingly refined range of materials, relying on a concentrated vocabulary of wood, glass, textile, naturally shed animal antlers, and precious metals. He often juxtaposes “high” and “low” materials in the same work: rhinestones, gold and silver chain, and black mirrored panels meet lumberyard two-by-fours and white cotton t-shirts coated in latex. In these juxtapositions, the former adorns the latter in a way that is transformative for both.

ARTIST STATMENTS

My work is about seeing the unseen – the invisible presence which exists in our minds and surrounds all objects, experiences, and memories. Having spent my childhood on a small ancestral farm amidst the beautiful, yet polluted environment and post-industrial decay of rural West Virginia, I developed a keen interest in being part of and observing natural systems, time and the process of life and death, and an aesthetic sensibility synthesizing the organic and the machine.

I focus on the quiescent potential of materials and environments to be more and different than how they are currently perceived and understood; fulfilling an innate desire to explore, discover, share, and think. Drawing attention to physiological systems of vision, thought, and memory, I am interested in making conspicuous our abbreviated and abstracted understanding of reality, time, and identity. Initially arousing involuntary attention through democratic formal means, the content of my work then enters the cognitive as one actively relates this experience with those already held in the mind as memory. At this juncture of feeling and thought meaning is produced. By delaying this process through reorganizing the fabric of the everyday into the unusual, a heightened sense of the present is felt. Ultimately, one walks away more self aware and delighted in everyday visual ephemera and the experience of being a living breathing being.

I chose a neutral color, white, symbolizing a collective identity rather than individual.

L’Artista Valentina De’ Mathà, invitata al Padiglione Italia / Regione Abruzzo della 54a Mostra Internazionale d’Arte La Biennale di Venezia, esporrà un’installazione scultorea intitolata “Silenzio”,
un progetto che parla della sua Terra natale: L’Abruzzo.
"Silenzio" vuole essere un'opera commemorativa delle 308 vittime del tragico terremoto che il 6 Aprile 2009 ha devastato la città di L’Aquila.
In "Silenzio" l’artista ha voluto raccontare la drammaticità della catastrofe attraverso fragili sculture di carta
nate tutte da un’unica matrice.
Un lavoro molto lungo su cui sta lavorando da circa due anni, infatti ogni scultura ha bisogno di 2-3 giorni di lavorazione.
L'installazione completa comprende 308 corpi bianchi (93x28x12) che si fondono con la parete in un ordine casuale. Tutti i corpi sono nati da un’ unica matrice come noi nasciamo tutti dalla Madre Terra.
È stato scelto per le sculture un colore neutro, il bianco, colore dell' assenza e, in contrapposizione, della pienezza, a simboleggiare un’ identità collettiva e non individuale.
L’opera è interamente in carta, materiale organico che subisce i cambiamenti del tempo e, come il
corpo umano, torna nella Terra che lo ha visto nascere.
È un'installazione che incita al silenzio, al rispetto e ad ascoltarsi.
Il silenzio, appunto, dopo il terremoto di L'Aquila.

I was born in Switzerland, where at an early age I began experimenting with photography. I graduated with excellence from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Italy. My curiosity of the human form lead me to approach photography artistically. This artistic approach continues to inform my work, including my fashion photography.

I am inspired when I encounter passionate people; their ability to belong to the moment when our sensory receptors are amplified. Photographically speaking, this is the moment when I act, the time when pupils dilate and I can get closer to my subject. “The pleasure in seeing is like spring which feeds into a summer of deeper understanding, the possibility TO BE together with others.”

I disguise myself completely behind the “machine”—the camera. This is where I derive my strength. In a sense, I am in each of my pictures, literally there in the picture hiding. It’s a way of surpassing my limits, my reality, in an instant without mediation.

My point of view as an artist? I think that society creates and destroys models in the interest of a few. It’s our responsibility, as artists, to find or create alternatives.

Mary Coble is a performance artist and photographer. She often uses her body as a metaphor and site for questions that involve, as well as move beyond, corporeal matters. Through these performances Coble challenges herself and others to critically consider their reactions and interactions with social issues of injustices. She strives to confront violence, bigotry and poverty that she sees a as threat to society both physically and mentally.

BLOOD SCRIPT 2008

Coble meticulously documented the inscriptions from her previous three Marker (NY, DC and Madrid) Performances and compiled a list of over 200 hateful words and phrases written on her in various languages. For Blood Script, the artist has 75 of the most common words tattooed onto her skin, without ink, in a very ornate script. Using decorative letters, Coble creates a dichotomy between the beautiful visual form of the words and the ugly meanings they convey semantically.

The words appear in blood as the tattooing needles penetrate Coble’s skin. Blood Paintings are made of each word by immediately pressing watercolor paper against the fresh incisions. The mirror image of the word is imprinted on the paper in blood. As each Blood Painting is created, it is placed on the wall during the performance. The number of prints on the wall expands proportionately as the artist’s skin becomes increasingly infused with hateful epithets.

The elaborate script initially engages viewers in the optical challenge of identifying each tattooed insult. The recognition of each word stimulates viewers to reflect upon the significance of what the insult means to them. This dynamic process mediates a silent dialogue between the artist and her audience as the performance progresses.

NOTE TO SELF 2005

Note to Self is a performance that deals with gay, lesbian, bi and transgender people who have died due to hate crimes committed against them. Coble compiled a list of 436 names of these individuals, through research on various websites, news reports and official and unofficial documentation. The list started and ended with the word “anonymous” to acknowledge the many lives that were taken that my list didn’t include.

During a solid twelve-hour timeframe these names were tattooed, with no ink, onto the surface of Coble’s body. She had these names inklessly tattooed on her body as a reference to the brutality of these murders; many of the victims had slurs such as dyke or faggot carved into their bodies.

After each name was completed, a Blood Painting was made by pressing a sheet of paper directly against the fresh abrasion. These prints were then places on the walls of the gallery. As the list of name compiled on her body the same list was mirrored on the gallery walls.

The first three hours of this performance was open to the public while the last nine hours were webcast so the audience could watch via the net.

Ivy Noise, 2009

Electric wires climb the white walls, following not a casual pattern, but a defined one, after an accurate study of the growth of the ivy. Black lines design organic forms; brances form which unusual flowers blossom: conical speakers of various dimentions. A previously defined soundscape is given forth by some of these peculiar buds which acts as a background to the acoustic improvisation, determined instead by the human presence. Every noise is being captured by a series of microphones and random samples are taken in real time by a custom designed software, and rendered back through the speakers. Voices, steps, movements, nourish the installation. The totally synthetic sound, generated by this technological parasite creates however the illusion of being in a natural environment. A psychoacoustic journey, in which nothing stands still; everything is being transformed in an unstoppable and impromptu process of metamorphism. An experience which through multisensory stimulation creates a relation between man and technology, hypothesizing not only a peaceful coexistence of the two elements, but even an eco-sustainable hybridization, reinforced by the use of recycled materials.

LES FEMMES HÉRÉTIQUES

For Winkler+Noah, photography was the most fitting point of arrival for an artistic itinerary that they began instinctively from childhood, exploring all the forms of expression that they encountered — painting, drawing and sculpture — amalgamating them and trying out blends between different media.

This creative need for self-expression matured over the years, first becoming curiosity and then a strong will to create and to photograph. After a professional detour as an illustrator and graphic designer, Noah met Winkler and this acted as a detonator, producing a mixture fusing traditional photography with experimentation.

What their pictures reveal is a sensation of hyper-reality: the protagonists of their portraits appear in a real context, but they stand out from it as if highlighted by reality itself. They are stark, intense photos because each single picture encloses an idea and conveys powerful emotions to the observer. The artists deal personally with post-production so that the creative process joins up with itself like a circle.

They have received recognition all over the world and their works are been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, London, Seoul and Milan.

Cleaved Wall, 1969-70

Before New York artist Barry Le Va, born 1941 in Long Beach, California, turned to art, he spent the early 1960s studying maths and architecture.

His works are the result of a process of distributing, spilling, scattering, blowing, layering, dropping, throwing or crushing—using common materials like wooden slats, ball bearings, pieces of felt, aluminium bars, viscous oil, flour, powdered chalk, cast concrete and neoprene rubber.
